A baby hem is a small, rolled hem that is only 1/8” or 1/4” wide. It is sewn on a machine without a rolled hem foot.
It is great for light weight or delicate fabrics such as satin and silk.
We use this technique for the flutter sleeve on our Champagne Field Dress to create a small, neat hem since the sleeve itself is quite narrow.

Step 1
Press the curved edge of your sleeve under by 3/8” towards the wrong side of your fabric.
Step 2
Sew with 1/8” seam allowance
Use an edge foot if possible. This will help you keep a perfectly straight stitch line. It is also great when sewing bias tape. This foot is a great resource for a small investment.
Step 3
Trim down the excess seam allowance as close to your stitch line as possible.
Step 4
Fold over again towards the wrong side of your fabric, following the stitch line. Press in place.
Step 5
Sew the folded edge with a 1/8 inch seam allowance. Your baby hem is done!
