Two Easy Ways to Patchwork the Schoolhouse Sundress

Patchworking is one of our favorite ways to make the Schoolhouse Sundress truly unique. It’s a chance to play with color and pattern, use up your scrap stash, and create a garment that’s completely you. Plus, there’s no “right” or “wrong” way to do it—just two fun methods to try!
First — grab your Schoolhouse Sundress pattern here!
Method 1: Mix and Match Each Pattern Piece

This is the easiest way to get started if you’ve never patchworked before!
All you have to do is choose a different fabric for each pattern piece and sew the sundress together as you normally would. That’s it—no overthinking required. Just mix, match, and see where it takes you.

Why we love it: It’s quick, perfect for using up scraps, and results in a dress that’s completely unique to you.

Method 2: Make Your Own Patchwork “Fabric”

If you want to get a little more crafty, this method is for you. It takes a bit more time, but the results are so worth it!
Here’s how it works:
- Sew scraps together to make a new piece of patchworked “fabric.”
- Finish the seams of the patchworked fabrics with zig zag stitch or serger
- Make sure it’s at least a few inches larger than your pattern piece.
- Lay your pattern piece on top, cut as usual, and sew your garment together.

Why we love it: It feels like you’re blending quilting, crafting, and fashion all in one—and every single piece is one-of-a-kind.
