Understanding Fit
Understanding ease and why it matters
Ease is the amount of extra room between your body measurements and the finished garment measurements.
Why is ease important?
We need ease to allow for movement. The amount of ease represented in a garment can also reflect intended style and shape. To figure out how much ease a pattern has, simply subtract your body measurement from the finished garment measurements listed on the pattern. This difference is the amount of ease built into the garment.
Finding your perfect fit
At Matchy Matchy, we believe that fit is all about comfort and personal preference. Our patterns are intentionally designed with a relaxed, cool, and casual vibe — think easy-going, comfortable styles with a little extra room to move. That’s why we include about 4-6” (10-15 cm) of built-in ease in most of our designs. If this feels like your ideal fit, the size you find using the body measurement size chart will likely align perfectly with the finished garment size chart.
Remember, the best size for you is the one that feels right for your body and your style. Just because you measure a size medium on the body measurement size chart doesn’t mean you have to stick with that size. You’re in control of your fit!
Here’s how you can adjust
- If you love a relaxed, oversized look size up for more ease and a looser fit.
- If you prefer a more tailored, form-fitting look, sizing down will give you a closer fit with less ease.
- For garments without closures (like zippers or buttons), make sure there’s enough ease to get the garment on and off easily!
We encourage you to experiment with different sizes to find what makes you feel your best. Each pattern can be adjusted to match your personal style, and that’s part of the fun! Remember, sewing is all about making something that’s uniquely yours. So, take the time to find your ideal fit—whether it’s relaxed and roomy or sleek and fitted, the choice is yours!
