Why Scrap Theory?

In this post, we’re spotlighting one of our favorite ways to sew a pattern — patchwork style using our Scrap Theory.

Scrap theory is our own term for the alchemy that happens when small scraps of different colors and patterns combine into a larger, more intricate design.

Whether you're working from leftover quilting cottons or a stash of beloved linen bits, this project is an easy way to turn scraps into something you’ll want to wear all summer long.

We love the idea of digging thru your scraps and giving them a second life. Patchwork adds a playful, one-of-a-kind twist to your shorts—and it’s surprisingly simple to do. Use your leftover quilting cottons, old favorite linens, or those little cuts of fabric you’ve been “saving for something special.” This is that something.

Tips for using Scrap Theory

Start by choosing a color palette—this keeps things cohesive even with different prints.

1. Use the pattern pieces as a guide

Since the shape of the shorts are so simple this is a great place to start. Pick 3-4 different fabrics and cut out the pattern pieces using a mix and match strategy within your color palette. Don't think about the placement too much, since you already have a cohesive color scheme the end result will be fun and interesting!

We used a combination of our bull denim and custom cotton twill fabrics.

2. Create fabric from Scraps

Use all the scraps! Create "new fabric" from your smaller scraps before cutting out your pattern piece. This is a really fun way to use up those smaller, precious remnants you are holding on to. Again, since the color palette is simplified (or analogous), the end result will be cohesive.

We used a combination of linen and cotton fabrics left over from other projects. The fabrics weights are not exactly the same and that's OK. Go with what feels good.

How to style your scrap theory Weekend Chore Shorts

Pair them with a soft tank, your favorite worn-in tee, or go all-out summer lounge set and sew a matching patchwork top.
