Why We Love It

This is one of those fabrics we think every sewist should try. Our Workwear Cotton Twill is soft right off the bolt and already has that relaxed, slightly lived-in look we love. It feels sturdy and dependable without being stiff, making it perfect for garments you want to wear often and keep for a long time.

We chose this particular twill because the weight feels just right for relaxed pants, overalls, easy chore coats, and overshirts. It holds its shape beautifully, but it’s still soft and comfortable enough for everyday wear. It also washes incredibly well, becoming even softer and more relaxed over time.

Workwear Cotton Twill is part of our Matchy Core collection because it’s such a useful wardrobe staple. We keep it in stock throughout the year, rotating the colors with the seasons so there’s always something that works with the rest of your handmade wardrobe.

Fabric Details

Made from 100% cotton, this midweight twill has a subtle diagonal texture and a soft, gently structured feel. The colors are easy to wear and pair beautifully with both prints and other solid fabrics.

What It’s Like to Sew

This is such a satisfying fabric to work with. It cuts cleanly, presses beautifully, and stays put while you sew. It has enough structure to make pockets, seams, and topstitching look really polished, without being difficult or fussy at the machine.

If you’re newer to sewing with heavier fabrics, this twill is a friendly place to start. We recommend using a fresh denim or heavier universal needle and taking a little extra care where several layers meet.

What to Sew

This twill is perfect for relaxed, everyday garments that need some structure while still feeling comfortable and easy to wear. We’d reach for it to make:

  • Relaxed pants and structured shorts
  • Overalls and utility-style jumpsuits
  • Chore coats and lightweight jackets
  • Overshirts and workwear-inspired button-ups
  • Structured skirts and dresses
  • Bags, totes, and everyday accessories

Care & Color Notes

We recommend prewashing your fabric before cutting, as cotton may shrink during its first wash. Machine wash in cold water on a gentle cycle, then tumble dry on low or hang to dry. Use a warm iron when needed.

This twill will soften and develop an even more relaxed, lived-in character with washing while continuing to hold up beautifully.

We do our very best to photograph our fabrics as accurately as possible, but every screen displays color a little differently. Because of this, the color you see on your computer, tablet, or phone may not be an exact match to the fabric in person. If color is especially important for your project, we always recommend ordering a swatch first.
