The Recess Play Pants are an everyday easy fitting pant with plenty of room for comfort. They feature an elasticated waistband, separated slant front pockets and optional back pocket(s). The seam down the center front and center back legs allows for optimal patchwork fun. The rise hits just slightly below the natural waist. The pattern is drafted as a full length pant giving you the flexibility to wear them full length or cuffed. The pattern can also be easily shortened to ankle length or lengthened as needed. View A has a 2" (5 cm) wide hem. View B has an elasticated mini peplum cuff for some added sass.

With all Matchy Matchy sewing patterns, we've designed the Recess Play Pants to have simple shapes and easy construction to take the overwhelm out of sewing and to help you find the joy of discovery.

Chelsea (short hair) is 5'5" and Morgan is 5'9". Both are wearing a size small with no modifications.

Haven’t used yet

I printed out the pattern and it appears to be a perfect pant pattern for me. I love that you can change up the fabrics on any section. When I can find time to actually make the pattern I can write another review. So far so good however!

This pattern is great! Very easy to follow, and fun to play with :D I made myself 3 pairs already and I am excited that the possibilities for matching different fabrics are endless!

Love this pattern!

This is a great pattern- I’ve used it once now to make a pair of pants with a cotton canvas fabric and it turned out great. I would echo others in saying it runs a tad large but I just sized down and it worked for me.

Comes up large

I choose to make the trousers in a Medium but they turned out way too big. I’m a UK size 10 (US size 6 if that helps), and 5’4”. I made them all the way through to adding the waistband but stopped there once it was clear they were too big, however I can tell they will be too long as well.
That being said, it was such an enjoyable pattern to make.. I even enjoyed piecing together the print-at-home method. The instructions are really clear and it was a good amount of challenging for someone who hasn’t made clothes from scratch in probably 20 years.
I will be making again, but this time in a small or even XS.

Really fun to make!

I made these according to my hip measurements (42”) and shortened them 1.5”. I sewed the cuff down too because the scraps I used were very lightweight and didn’t cuff well. I also ended up having to shorten the front rise because they were very baggy and poofy at the crotch and hips, even for relaxed pants that have a lot of nice built in ease. I have this problem with most pants and shorts bottoms, so I think it’s just my body and not the pattern. I’m still working out what adjustments I need for next time. Overall, I love this pattern and plan on making more pairs soon! I think with the right fit adjustments they might just end up being my favorite comfy pants pattern! I’m a confident beginner if that matters.
