Red Bean Soft Touch Cotton

We searched high and low for a lightweight cotton twill that felt basic—but not too basic—and this one is exactly what we hoped to find. Its incredibly fine twill weave is barely noticeable, but it gives the fabric a little more body and a much more interesting feel than your average cotton poplin. Right off the bolt, it’s wonderfully soft with a subtle velvety finish. After washing, it really shows its magic, becoming even softer with an easy, lived-in look we absolutely love. It has the gentle streetwear feel of a technical fabric while still being breathable, comfortable, and 100% cotton.

We love this fabric so much that we’ve decided to make it part of our Matchy Core collection—a year-round essential and one of our go-to fabrics for everyday sewing. We’ll keep it in the shop throughout the year, thoughtfully rotating the color palette with a mix of dependable staples and carefully chosen seasonal shades.

This lightweight cotton twill has enough body to hold its shape beautifully without feeling stiff or heavy. The subtle weave gives it a smooth drape, a soft brushed feel, and a little more substance than cotton poplin.

This is such an easy and satisfying fabric to work with. It cuts cleanly, presses beautifully, and quietly behaves itself while you sew. The extra bit of body makes it easier to handle than very lightweight cottons, while still being soft enough for gathering and relaxed silhouettes. It washes beautifully, dries quickly, and doesn’t wrinkle quite as readily as poplin or linen. Be sure to prewash it before cutting so you can see—and feel—that wonderfully soft, lived-in finish.

This is a great choice when you want the ease of cotton with a slightly more modern, streetwear-inspired feel. It works especially well for:

Machine wash in cold water on a gentle cycle. Tumble dry low or line dry.
