About the pattern
The Wavy Quilted Vest brings a modern, playful twist to a classic layering piece. Designed with a relaxed, hip-length fit and a charming wavy scallop edge that curves around the center front and front and back hem line, it’s equal parts cozy and cool. This vest adds instant personality to any outfit — topped off with two oversized patch pockets and a sweet bow tie closure at the center front.
This is a joyful little project to dip your hands into quilting — perfect for using up smaller fabric pieces or experimenting with color and texture. Try it in solid fabrics with contrasting binding to make those wavy edges pop, or go for a patchwork look using your favorite scraps.
No matter how you sew it up, the Wavy Quilted Vest is a creative, cozy addition to your handmade wardrobe — a reminder that making should always be fun!
As with all Matchy Matchy patterns, The Wavy Quilted Vest is designed with intention: simple shapes, approachable construction, and plenty of room for creativity. As a new sewist I'm still not great with vias binding and so I found that only after making this vest three times did I get the hang of it. But it seems well loved because everyone thinks it's cute and I managed to make a pattern pair of trousers to match the vest which really completed the look. I find the curved edges on the vest challenging but also charming. I ended up sizing down a lot because I wanted something more fitted. Something I learned is to also make sure that both fabrics (inside and outside) are made of the same material and when attaching them to the filling to be careful with the direction and style of your sewing. I tried this with straight lines and it went smoothly but once I experimented with cotton on the outside and a fleece type fabric on the inside with a squiggle design. While it turned out ok there was tension on the fabric that made it warp. Make sure to also try on the vest to be sure of fit throughout the process.
Love this pattern. Perfect versatile addition to my wardrobe.
It's different, quirky and quite easy.
Made it for my daughter and it fit perfectly. Thanks for this gift.
This is a well written pattern and the design of the vest is stunning! The squiggly edges are aesthetically very pleasing. This project will make you hone your skills of using bias tape around curved edges, which is both fun and challenging, but the pattern provides tips on how to achieve the best results. As a shorter gal, I did need to remove ~2 inches off the bodice length.
